Henri Cartier-Bresson at the Art Institute of Chicago

As one of the fashion photographers around here we have some of the best equipment money can buy but that won’t help you take a great picture if you don’t have an “eye” for subject matter and the technical skills to tie it all together. Born in France in 1908, Henri Cartier-Bresson was one of the most prolific photographers of the first half of the 20th century and was also one of the founders of Magnum Agency.

Starting Sunday, July 25 and showing through October 3rd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, has a show on display at the Art Institute of Chicago and next weekend I’m going to go to the show with my girlfriend. Now here’s a guy with an eye for subject matter who didn’t have an expensive camera but new street life and wanted to capture everything about it on film. Film mind you, not digital. I’m a complete digital nut but I love collecting old cameras and have a couple at my house so, needless to say when a show like this comes around I can hardly wait to go. Henri Cartier-Bresson died in August of 2004.

Were going to make a day and an evening out of this show and after visiting the museum we’re going to meet a group of friends and have drink and dinner on a roof top patio (weather permitting) It’s a dressy casual affair and since I just bought the new Alan Payne “Vanilla Buck Oxford” Shoe I have several options that will carry me from the show right to drinks and dinner with no problem at all. Walking through an art gallery as big as the Art Institute you’re going to want to wear a great comfortable shoe and these Oxfords are very comfortable. A nice pair of brown pants and a dress shirt will be perfect. I’ll keep a jacket in the car just in case it’s cooler or Sarah needs to keep warm and we’re good to go.
